YGGDRASIL, THE TREE OF LIFE
Yggdrasil is the tree of life according to Norse mythology. It has three roots: The first goes towards the Spring of Hvergelmir. The second to the well of Mímir, and the last to the Home of the Norns, who governed Fate.
The nine worlds are as follows in ascending order:
- Helheim, the home of the dead.
- Svartálfaheim, the home of the dark elves
- Niflheim, the home of mists and terror.
- Jötunheim, the home of the giants.
- Midgard, the home of humans (also known as Mannaheim). From here extends the bridge called Bifröst, which the gods used to travel to and from their worlds.
- Vanaheim, the home of the Vanir (the tribe of nature and fertility gods).
- Alfheim, the home of the light elves (also known as Ljusalfheim).
- Asgard, the realm of the Aesir.
- Muspelheim, the primordial world of fire, where Ginnungagap is located.
